BIOGRAPHY

Karen Whitman grew up in the suburbs of New York City, and visited "the city" nearly every weekend where she developed an appreciation and love for its architecture and its unique vitality. She has a special affinity with the graphic quality and detail of its vibrant streets and massive structures while imbuing them with a warmth and playful accessibility.

After completing a B.F.A. degree in Printmaking from State University of New York at Buffalo, Whitman lived in Manhattan for 18 years, where she studied at the Art Students League and Parsons School of Design, and continued to be inspired by her urban environment. In 1991 she discovered the art colony of Woodstock, NY and moved there in 1994. She continues to go to New York City weekly to sketch, work on prints, visit galleries, and participate in exhibitions.

Karen specializes in linoleum cuts (linoleum block prints), primarily of New York City, which she prints on both antique and modern presses. She has exhibited extensively throughout the country and has won numerous national awards, including Medals of Honor from Allied Artists of America, Audubon Artists (twice), The National Association of Women Artists and The Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club. Her work is in numerous public and private collections and is listed in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in America.

The prints of Karen Whitman were featured in the December, 2002 issue of American Artist Magazine.
